Event: Parenting in a Cyberage
Challenges to foster parents are not in short supply, and technology has added further complications to behaviour and risk management for children and youth. This workshop will raise parent’s awareness of online risks, youth activities online and offer some suggestions and resources for follow up. (Max 40)
Topics will include
ü Emerging trends in online youth culture.
ü Orientation to social media, video sites and how children and youth use them.
ü Examples/stories illustrating negative and positive consequences of social media.
ü High-risk activities online: sexting, viewing of extreme images and pornography, gambling, online addiction and/or contact with ‘strangers’ online.
ü Suggestions and guidelines for engaging with children and youth online
ü Internet safety tips and resources.
ü Link to SOLOS exclusive collection of world-class educational sites for parents.
Issues specifically addressed will include: high-risk youth activities online (cyberbullying, sexting, luring, privacy concerns and access to dysfunctional material). (Max 40)
